What is See SAW Comics?

Ok, so from the top...

See SAW Comics is an online webcomics site. You are invited!

It's free, it's public, it's here:

https://seesawcomics.org/

It looks like this:

In a way, it's a COMPLIMENT to Instagram and other services. It's more intimate, less reliant on Silicon Valley, it's a potential hearth and home. We want it to showcase you and everyone at SAW without the distraction and difficulty of IG, et al. (You can still post where ever else you want- that's smart!)

If you're enrolled in a SAW Group, you are invited to pitch a series!

A series can be a short story, a long story, or an ongoing series of your regular work, which we call a Grab Bag series.

This is where to pitch your series to us:

All we are interested in a pitch is:

  • Is it YOU?
  • Does it align with the SAW values? (which boil down basically to: don't hurt anybody...)

We want your work to be FINISHED but it doesn't mean your entire project has to be finished before you start posting. You can serialize, and finish as you go. It just means this is not the place for drafts or sketches or helpful chit chat- all of that is wonderful, and we do it in the Mighty Network.

This is the showcase place, to show off and share what we have done.

We're starting slow and hoping to build over time.

This page will walk you through UPLOADING comics into the SEE SAW COMICS Dashboard.

For those of you familiar with Wordpress, and already been through this, open the link below in a new tab

If you don't know what the heck we're talking about, read on!

Upload Instructions

Video version (ignore the squeaking caused by my cat who you may hear purring at 1:50 ლ(ಠ_ಠ ლ) )

Ok, you've filled out the form and been accepted, now what?

SAW WILL CREATE YOUR SERIES AND INVITE YOU AS AN AUTHOR

Once you have an account (if you already have a Wordpress account, let us know and we will use that.)

Once we set up the series, you will add a new comic

Adding a New Comic

From the left-hand menu, underneath the WP Dashboard, go to the Toocheke Menu, which pops up to the right, and choose “Add New Comic.”

Fill in the details in the available fields:

Comic Title

Add your Comic episode title or other unit (could be page 2, etc.) here.

In the Box below is your image for MOBILE DEVICES.

If you've sliced your images into single panels, great. If not, upload your whole page here. (It will be a little more difficult to read on mobile but we'll get over it!)

How to upload images

IMPORTANT: Name your images consistently. Use the same intro, either your name of your series name on all your files. IE hart-episode2-panel1 or BisDying-episode2-panel1, something like that.

Everything will become a big mess otherwise. We're begging you, please be consistent! :)

Then click ADD MEDIA

it looks like this.

Uploading single panels looks like this. Make sure they all stay checked.

It will look something like this, hopefully in the right order. If not, you will have to copy and paste around a little.

Note that it will be side by side until it is on a skinny screen.  (You can see that more clearly in the video above.)

DESKTOP

In the Desktop Comic Editor section, “Add your unsliced comic image for desktop users here.”

Looks like this.

Click ADD MEDIA again and add your single page or image you want to be on DESKTOP

Question! What size should my comics be?

We dunno exactly. We're guessing the general 900-2400 pixel range is good for desktop width. For single panels, seems like 450-1200 pixel width is about right.

Aim for too big instead of too small and let's see how it goes.

DO YOU USE PROCREATE FOR SINGLE PANELS?

TRY THE STRIP DESIGNER APP TO ASSEMBLE INTO A SINGLE PAGE--->

You can use any single panel here, or create a new one.

If you choose a single panel, you can find it in the media library by choosing the third tab labeled “Media Library” from the upload window, then search for and select the image again for use in a new location/post/page.

2. SERIES:

Choose YOUR SERIES int he dropdown menu here.

 3. Your genres or TAGS

In the “Comics Tags” box,

You should choose from existing tags by clicking on the “choose form most used tags” link.

THESE are the tags we are using:

  • non-fiction
  • memoir
  • history
  • diary
  • informational
  • graphic medicine
  • fiction
  • literary
  • slice of life
  • underground
  • humor
  • sci-fi/fantasy

Please DO NOT ADD TAGS, thanks!

You can also choose existing Tags by typing. They will appear shortly after you start typing, in a drop-down menu.

You can also remove tags by selecting the little  “x” next to each tag.

Avoid creating new tags unless advised by your staff contact at SAW.

Quick video demonstrating SERIES and also MOBILE to Susan Marks, yay Susan!

PUBLISH / UPDATE

When the comic is ready, go to the “Publish” box and choose “publish immediately,” OR schedule the comic for publication on a schedule, as discussed with your SAW staff contact.

(Note it might say UPDATE if you've already hit PUBLISH once, as below.)

To schedule the comic for publication, select the month, day, and time you want your comic to publish, and click “OK” to save it.

Then, click on “Publish” to make your post public (at the date/time you scheduled or immediately depending on what you selected).

IGNORE EVERYTHING ELSE, THANKS!

We did it!
