WHAT WE'LL DO:
We'll be pairing off in class, and interviewing each other. Briefly interviewing each other while drawing a portrait of their partner. Then, each person asks their partner what their first memory is (a juicy open question), and takes as thorough notes as they can while the person answers.
Then, Miriam will give a brief powerpoint lecture about techniques of doing interview comics, that will give people ideas of how to do it on their own time if desired.
Finally, we'll create a basic four-panel, one-page comic out of their partner's memory (everyone works solo for this part, not consulting their partner). Inspired by a Lynda Barry ERNIE POOK COMEEK, they will take sentences from their notes to write a narrative caption in each panel, then create the images with brush and india ink, no pencilling or pre-drawing.
We will share those! Participants seeing their memory from someone else's perspective will inspire them to make their own different comic about it, or gain perspective on their own narrative style/choices.
